About us
Background
Carobs were considered ,among other tree crops,as part of a program for sustainable farming on our property in South Australia. The first trial trees were planted in 1981 in a one acre irrigated plot.We knew very little about propagating, grafting, pruning and general husbandry of the carob.
In 1984 we imported 12 varieties of carob from The Coit collection in california which was made possible by Mr Henry Esbenshade who lived in California at that time.We also embarked on a five year research program identifying and evaluating hundreds of trees in South Australia for suitable varieties. These trials led to the first commercial orchard in Australia being planted in 1985.
The first plantings were subjected to severe frosts and wind damage which retarded their establishment. There has been a great amount of learning and technical information gained from this experience which is essential for new growers to have available.During the mid 90's market research was conducted with small amounts of carob syrup which we made in cottage industry style. This research revealed there was a market for carob syrup.Product development was undertaken to establish a modern process to capture the flavour sensation.
the first kibbler imported into Australia arrived in Adelaide in 1997 and is now installed and commissioned at Burra.
